South African Pop Star Finishes High School At 60

Whatta ya get when you mix inspiration with tough love, you know like when Mami‘s hand magically appeared out of nowhere after we said or did something bad, yanking our ears until they stung.

Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse is a South African pop star who had it all–fame, lovely ladies, and money.  But he didn’t have a high school degree because he quit school at the age of 16 to launch his music career.

None of these things filled the void he felt.

More than 40 years after dropping out, Hotstix–his stage to not say “club name”–returned to the classroom.  Yes the classroom, not an online South African GED equivalent.

He went back to school.

And while he’s learning, he’s teaching his classmates, well manners, like don’t answer the cell phone when it rings or start texting!

“South African Pop Star Finishes High School At 60” aired on August 20, 2012 on NPR’s Tell Me More with Michel Martin with me as guest host while Michel was away.  I promise, it will make you smile!
