Instead of planning a date or Valentines night that revolves around food, opt for a fun night out that will be good for your health as well as your relationship!
My favorite way to moverlo con my love: partner dancing.
Partner dancing will get your close to your amor (emotionally and physically) while providing you both with great health benefits. Not only is dancing a great cardio workout, but studies prove it increases brain connectivity and keeps your memory sharp.
Fantastic, Natalie, but I don’t know the difference between samba and waltz. Where do I begin?
There is a partner dance for everyone!
Have a preference for ritmos latinos? Break a sweat to salsa, merengue, bachata, quebradita, and cumbia.
Enjoy upbeat classics? Try hustle or swing.
Want something slow and romantic? Waltz, foxtrot, rumba, and tango set the mood.
Looking to show off at the club? Merengue and hustle make up the night life scene.
I have always wanted to try dancing, but I have two left feet!
As a former ballroom dance instructor, I can confidently say that anyone can learn to dance. Not a natural salsera? Start with a slower dance like waltz or rumba. Invest in 1-2 private lessons or enroll in a group class until you master the basics.
I never miss an episode of Dancing with the Stars, but my man hides when I mention merengue…
There is hope! I have witnessed many men transform from wall flowers to flash dancers. Often, our honies worry that dancing isn’t masculine or, more often (like mujeres!), they fear they will make mistakes.
Four tips to get your hombre bailando:
- Tell it like it is: partner dancing is as machista as it gets–el hombre leads, la mujer follows. Punto final.
- To build confidence, sign up for group or private lessons until you both get the hang of dancing together. ¿What a fun date night, no?
- Let him choose! Maybe he wouldn’t be caught dead waltzing around but has always wanted to try salsa or swing.
- Remind him that you will be his focus and he yours. He is expected to touch and look at you uninterrupted. ¿Qué más quiere?
I would love to get into partner dance, but I’m soltera!
Having a boyfriend is not required to learn a partner dance! In fact, dancing with a variety of partners makes it easier to master new steps and avoid repeating the same mistakes.
And frankly, chica, you’re a chica! Whether you go to the club with your comadres or join a group class at a ballroom studio, there will be plenty of chicos asking you to dance.
