Having been to the actual event I can’t tell you how much it impressed me to see an 18 yr old girl from a remote village stand up and talk about women’s rights in Spanish and her native Queqchi in front of hundreds of onlookers all the while her native dress was completely bare breasted. She was the only one representing the bare breast look that year but did she stutter or seem the least bit nervous? Nope. Of course there were many other awesome moments at the Rabin Ajaw contest but that young woman renewed my feminism. The photographs are definitely worth seeing. Juan Carlos did a fine job capturing the physical details while letting the character of each woman shine through.
