I love the #ArtAfterDark yearly fundraiser at the end of the dog days of the Washington D.C. summer. Despite the city being quiet with so many residents on holiday, I love the eclectic party goers who jam the courtyard the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) shares with its patron Organization of American States (OAS). Although attending three years, this is the second year in a row that I volunteer as I do my small part to support one of the most important permanent collections in the U.S. of contemporary art from Latin America and the Caribbean, plus really cool traveling exhibits by emerging artists. My task is to help to check in guestswhich is perfect for me who scans clipboards and Eventbrite lists with the rigor of a prison warden to make sure no freeloaders slip through. Wanna party? Awesome. But cough up $50 for free drinks and art while you help further AMA’s cultural and educational missions.
Whether it’s an ambassador (“Just call me by my first name, he humbly insisted”) to performance artists, U.S. Congressional staffers, and techies, were were all decked out as together our revelry helped make this the most important fundraising event for the museum. I “shopped in my closet”–finding a dark corral silk Tibi dress paired with dangly earrings, a trio of bangles, a lavender faux snake skin clutch, and gold Diane von Furstenberg strappy sandals. These weren’t the best option for the courtyard’s pebbled paths or a night of dancing to a live band and a DJ which is where I ended up after my shift at the check in table (next year I’ll wear wedgies). I also don’t know why I bothered to flat iron my hair. No amount of Moroccan oil was going to tame these tresses in the D.C. humidity!
I hope you see how much fun which I captured in these picture I snapped with my iPhone 5 , running some photos through my absolutely favorite app Instagram!
