I agree. Where your dad was born does not make you Latino. It’s about culture and ethnicity and traditions. Then again it seems the media is the one who is making this claim and hyping it up. Le sign.

Should he be an equal opportunity president who welcomes the voice of all people, and who uses his “roots” to connect with, and to propel Hispanics in this country, then he may be the first Latino president ala Bill being the First black.

Pero, papi has a long way to go before many of us giving him any culture cred.

Oh man, I think my head just exploded. Spanish does not a Latino make, there are plenty of Latinos that do not speak Spanish, nor does having a parent born in Mexico. Culture is learned and lived. If Romney considers himself Latino then I guess he is, but it’s up to him to claim it and he doesn’t seem to be claiming it.

I don’t like Romney and hate when a gringo goes all up in Florida trying to court Latinos simply for a time period before elections…and that his father is Mexican-born doesn’t automatically qualify him as a potential first Hispanic president. As you’ve noted, he’s not even acknowledged being “Latino.” It’s not cute trying to speak Spanish for the sake of a vote when you don’t speak it and then forget all of it once the elections have happened. Ugh. rhetoric. same ol’, same ol’. He’s done with those gimmicks, right? Latinos will get a wake up call if Romney makes any kind of impression in the elections.

i like your commentary viviana. i always look forward to it. PERO, i have to disagree here. i would love to see a latino on the ballot but mitt romney is not in the LEAST bit latino and he doesn’t advocate for latino interests. he is totally opposed to the DREAM act and i’m sorry but if you’re not for the DREAM act then you are standing in the way of the most reasonable piece of legislation recently introduced to empower the latino population in the US. i think some 85% of latinos support our right to DREAM. romney will be a harsh wake-up call for latinos if he gets elected.
